Hurdles and Falling Down

Posted by Grubby May. 3, 2009 @ 11:40 PM EDT

Track is back.

My last season to represent my much-loved middle school in sports. I've been in Track for three years since I was a 6th grader, and I had an okay career then. I always ran the 100 meter and the 4 by 1 and 4 by 2 relay, relying on my sprinting skills. But alas, I'm not as studly as the cream of the crop, so I got like 4th in districts for the 100, and 1st for all my relays.

But I finally took up hurdling this year. It looked really fun, and my coach said I had a special "trail leg", so I gave it a spin. Turns out I'm the best in my school, and the best in my district.

As an amateur however, I still am not experienced in hurdling yet. So I've fallen three times from hurdles, twice during practice, and once during a meet.

The one in the meet was kinda' "tragic". I was well in first place, facing last year's defending district champ who is slightly more experienced and faster than me. He apparently hurt his ankle while high jumping so I had the edge against him. But on the last straight away, I started stumbling from going to fast, and I started tripping. However, I had no will to slow down at all because I really wanted to win. So on the last hurdle, I fell down, did 6 barrel rolls, and got up to finish 4th out of 5th contestants.

Of course everyone was like: "Oh snapz!" or "Oh dear!", and of course everyone was like "that sucks really bad man." But I was mentally okay, I still have many more meets to go.

So I have these pretty nasty cuts and scrapes on my elbows, knees, and hands. Funny thing is, as soon as it's about to recover, I get hurt again, and it gets worse.

However I'm actually on a pain tolerance curriculum, appreciating toughness and moments when I'm not in pain.

So all is good, and I'm still doing the 70 m and 200 m hurdles, as well as the 4 x 200 m relay.
